A marketplace alternative for when it actually matters.
Marketplaces are excellent at small, disposable, well-specified jobs. They are unreliable at the one thing a business website has to do, which is represent the business for the next three years. This page is about telling those two situations apart.
What goes wrong
Four failure modes, in order of how often they happen.
None of this is an argument that marketplaces are bad. It is an argument about which jobs they suit.
A template sold as a custom build
The single most common outcome. You get a licensed theme with your logo and text placed into it. It can look fine. It also looks like several thousand other businesses, and it constrains everything you might want to change later.
The upsell ladder
The headline price buys the smallest version. Source files, extra revisions, a faster turnaround, commercial use — each is a separate purchase, and the total at the end rarely resembles the number that got you interested.
You end up writing the copy
Almost no gig at the low end includes written copy. So the site arrives as a shell, and the hardest and most valuable part of the job quietly transfers back to you.
No recourse that means anything
When the result is wrong, the practical options are a refund of a small sum and starting again. That is fine when the sum is small. It is not fine when a launch date depended on it.
Total cost, honestly
The gig price is not the price.

When a marketplace is the right answer
We will tell you this on email too.
Use a marketplace for a single graphic, a quick edit, a one-off asset, a piece of work you would throw away without a second thought. Paying studio prices for that is a waste of your money and our time, and we will say so.
Use a marketplace if you are testing an idea that may not exist in six weeks. A cheap, fast, disposable page is the correct tool for validating something.
Do not use one when the site is the first impression for a business you intend to run for years, when a launch date has money behind it, or when you need to be able to change the thing yourself later without asking permission.
What original work looks like
Judge it against a gig portfolio.
Four of these are recorded end to end, so you can watch the real site running rather than assess a static screenshot.
